LEAD INSPECTOR TRAINING

This 24-hour Lead Inspector Initial training course (Monday – Wednesday) is required by the Ohio Department of Health to apply for a Lead Abatement Inspector license and a pre-requisite for the Lead Risk Assessor license.

The purpose of this course is to equip inspectors with the specialized skills necessary to conduct accurate and defensible residential inspections for lead-based paint. Course follows EPA curriculum and HUD guidelines.

COURSE TOPICS

History of lead use, sources of environmental lead contamination, development of sampling strategies, lead-based paint sampling and analysis, inspection report generation, testing of other media for lead contamination, Ohio Department of Health rules, EPA/HUD regulations, theory and use of x-ray fluorescence analyzers, disclosure requirements.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Housing/commercial building inspectors, industrial hygienists, environmental safety and health consultants, trainers, and community development professionals should attend. This course is a prerequisite for the Risk Assessor Training course.

Lead Inspector scope of practice.

1)   A Lead Inspector is licensed to perform:

  1. a) Lead inspections;
  2. b) Lead-based paint sampling; and
  3. c) Clearance examinations.

2)   A Lead Inspector shall not:

  1. a) Perform lead risk assessments, lead hazard screen risk assessments, or other lead assessment activities;
  2. b) Design lead abatement projects;
  3. c) Prepare pre-abatement plans; or
  4. d) Perform lead abatement, lead-safe renovations, or essential maintenance practices.

LEAD RISK ASSESSOR TRAINING

This 16-hour Lead Risk Assessor Initial training course (Thursday and Friday) is required by the Ohio Department of Health to apply for a Lead Risk Assessor license.  You must take the 24-hour Inspector Initial to as a prerequisite to apply for the Lead Risk Assessor license.

Classroom lectures and hands-on activities are conducted to familiarize participants with the likely locations of lead hazards, the interpretation of results of paint, dust, soil and water testing; development of abatement and hazard reduction options; report generation, and disclosure requirements.

COURSE TOPICS

Developing testing and sampling strategies, sampling protocols, interpreting testing results, abatement plan development, ODH rules, and EPA/HUD regulations.

1)  A Lead Risk Assessor is licensed to conduct:

  1. a) Lead Inspections;
  2. b) Lead-based paint sampling;
  3. c) Clearance examinations;

  6. f) Other lead assessment activities, and
  7. g) Identify lead hazard control strategies to reduce or eliminate lead exposures.

2)   A Lead Risk Assessor shall not:

  1. a) Design lead abatement projects;
  2. b) Prepare pre-abatement plans;
  3. c) Write lead abatement specifications, and
  4. d) Perform lead abatement, lead-safe renovation or essential maintenance practices.

You must attend the whole class, any time missed must be made up before certificate can be issued.  You must also pass a written exam for issuance of a certificate.

Certificates are usually mailed within a week of the course completion.  Please contact the office if you need a copy of your certificate sooner.

Lead Risk Assessor Licenses are issued to the individual, not to a company.

You must attend a Lead Inspector Initial and a Lead Risk Assessor Initial training class in order to apply for the Risk Assessor license.

Application fee to the State of Ohio for the Lead Inspector License: $250.00

You must sit for a third party exam after applying for your license:  $70.00

License is good for two years.  To renew your license, you must show proof of attending an 8-hour refresher training course.

You must take a refresher course within your two year licensure period in order to renew your lead license.  Failure to do so will result in increased State application fees and if not renewed quickly enough, you will be required to repeat the 40 hours of training.

RESERVATION CANCELLATION

Cancellation out of a training class by a registrant will be subject to the following:

Cancellation at least 7 days before the first day of the training class will entitle the registrant to a full refund of all paid training class fees.

Cancellation 6 days or less, but before the first day of the training class will result in a refund of all paid class fees less a 50% penalty.

Cancellation on or after the first day of the training class, will result in no refund.

Cancellation Penalties are Waived if you Reschedule into a Future Training Class
